PLP: ‘Non-Bermudians Only Category Growing’

February 27, 2017 | 25 Comments

“In between the pretty words lies the stark reality of life under the OBA, which is that non-Bermudians are the only job category growing under the OBA,” Shadow Minister of the Environment, Planning & Workforce Development Diallo Rabain said.

Mr. Rabain said, “The OBA Government has a record of broken promises, anti-Bermudian policies and deception, which has led to the OBA failure to create jobs for Bermudians, OBA failure to reduce the debt, and OBA failure to balance the budget – all campaign pledges of the Government in the 2012 election.

“The OBA even boasted about tourism numbers while hotel jobs for Bermudians have fallen. The OBA say that they are ‘the safe hands Bermuda needs,’ but many Bermudians are asking ‘safe hands for who?’

“They haven’t been safe hands when it comes to protecting Bermudian jobs. They haven’t been safe hands when it comes to creating Bermudian jobs. The OBA seems to have safe hands for everyone but Bermudians,” Mr Rabain added.

The recently released National Economic Report of Bermuda [PDF] said, “Preliminary data from the 2016 Employment Survey indicates that the total number of jobs in Bermuda grew by 56 posts from 33,319 in 2015 to 33,375 in 2016, which equates to a 0.2 per cent increase.

“This year represents the first year that the number of jobs has increased since 2008 when the number of jobs amounted to 40,213.

“This increase ends seven consecutive years of job reductions in a Bermuda economy that only recently began to experience positive growth. Overall the island has lost 6,838 jobs since 2008, a reduction of 17.0 per cent.

“Jobs occupied by Non-Bermudians were the only status category to exhibit an increase in employment in 2016. Non-Bermudian jobs grew by 158 posts or 2.3 per cent. The figure rose from 6,990 in 2015 to 7,148 in 2016.

“Bermudians positions declined by a total of 75 posts or 0.3 per cent in 2016. Non-Bermudian Spouses of Bermudians accounted for 16 job losses while Permanent Residence Certificate holders experienced a decrease in posts of 11 positions.”

But haven’t the PLP been harping on for years that “thousands’ of Bermudians have had to leave Bermuda to find work?

So then to me I would think that this ‘decline’ of 75 Bermudian posts in actual fact is a significant increase in numbers compared to Bermudians that remain here.

More alternative facts from the PLP…..

Alternative-Facts spread by the PLP. Bermudians working in hospitality has been steadily growing...and this annoys the PLP to no end.

What are you trying to say? You are saying that a loss of Bermudian jobs is a good thing? What is wrong with you OBA Supporters?

The PLP also don't highlight that most of the Bermudian job decline would have originated within the government, as the OBA has been decreasing the CS through attrition and the CA is majority Bermudian... so the majority of the decline in Bermudian jobs doesn't equate to more Bermudians being laid off, but through retirement. Doesn't fully equate the rise in non-Bermudian jobs, but as I have said before, we will need to see a rise in non-Bermudian jobs again, before we fully see a rise in traditionally Bermudian job sectors, as we are far too heavily reliant in the services industries that those foriegn jobs support.

    Well said MP Rabain...
There is a problem when the only "increases" we see in the national scope are for Non Bermudians. It is a sad indictment that the OBA is not concerned about Bermudians as all of their investment and activity is geared towards non Bermudians, and the stats show this clearly.

@ watching for your information, the Hon. premier employs more Bermudians than all of the PLP members together. The OBA also want a Bermudian to have Rev Tweed/ Genevieve's position so really can't figure where you are coming from with your rants.

Mr. Rabain, please let us all know how YOU would get jobs for all the Bermudians that are out of work, I'd really like to know. You seem to have the answer so maybe you could go and tell the OBA how it's done. Also you can't put a dish washer, landscaper and file clerk into a CEO position so please let me know how you are going to do any better.

IF WE HAD continued the trends of 2011 - 2012* - PLP Govt., our total workforce at the end of 2015 would ONLY be approx. 29,575 instead of 33,319 (OBA Govt.) a whooping 3,744 LESS JOBS. Thank God OBA won in 2012 and hope they win in 2017 otherwise we will quickly go back to 2011 - 2012 massive job losses.

Fewer overseas employees = fewer residents

Fewer residents = less dollars being spent

Less dollars being spent = reduced turnover for Market Place, Lindo's, Arnolds, Belco, Bermuda Gas, Auto Solutions, Bermuda Motors, Coopers, Gibbons, Marks and Spencer, Makin Waves, Rubis, Esso, Liberty Theatre, Speciality Theatre, Speciality Grill, Pickled Onion, Frog and Onion, KFC, Mr. Chicken, Pasta Basta, Steven's Lunch wagon.....need I continue

Less Turnover for all of the above = reduced profits

Reduced profits = reduction of workforce.

Reduction of workforce = continued number of Bermudian's who are unable to pay their mortgage....probably based on unrealistic loan agreements made in the hey day when lending was irresponsible....

On the other hand Mr. Rabain.....Increase the number of residents and all this will change.

This is really really simple economics....even a school child understands this....

I don't see how else it can be explained, if you still don't get it then you prove even further how you lack the skills for the position you hold

I won't even pretend I'm suprised, I flew in on Air Canada the other day and counted ten people in the Tourist line and the rest in the Work Permit & "Bermudian" line, this from a flight 90% full.... And they did not look like the majority of the populace of this Island.... Maybe they were the new "Team Bermudas New Airport" I really hope that people are paying close attention to whats going on in the country..
